In a quiet corner of southern France, a ginger cat named Rémi has become the unlikely center of a courtroom saga, one that has pitted a 70-year-old woman against her neighbor and even challenged the limits of pet ownership laws.
For years, Rémi’s gentle strolls through the neighborhood were a familiar sight. But what began as a harmless feline curiosity turned into a legal nightmare for his owner, Dominique Valdès. The retired woman from Béziers says she was stunned to learn that her beloved pet’s daily wanderings had landed her in court.
“When I received notification of the conviction, it was as if I had been violently struck on the head,” Dominique told Le Parisien.
According to the tribunal’s ruling, Valdès was ordered to pay €1,250 ($1,435) in fines after her cat was accused of repeatedly invading her neighbor’s property. The verdict didn’t stop there, the court imposed an additional €30 penalty for each future trespass, effectively putting Rémi under neighborhood surveillance.
The neighbor’s complaints painted a vivid picture of feline chaos: paw prints in wet plaster, urine-stained bedding, and garden mishaps best left undescribed. But Valdès insists there’s no solid proof Rémi was to blame. In her neighborhood, she says, many ginger cats roam freely, some without owners at all.
“The judge didn’t seem to care,” she lamented, pointing out that stray cats often wander through the same gardens.
Since the court’s decision, life at the Valdès home has changed drastically. Rémi, once a free spirit chasing butterflies, is now confined indoors, and he’s not taking it well. “He’s gained weight and become aggressive. It’s like he’s been sentenced to house arrest,” Dominique said sadly.
But the ordeal isn’t over. Reports say she’s been summoned to court again this December after another alleged fence-hopping incident. If found guilty, Valdès could face an extra €2,000 ($2,300) fine and a daily penalty of €150 ($172) a staggering sum for what she calls “a cat being a cat.”
And for Dominique, it’s become deeply personal. “All I ever wanted was for him to be happy,” she said. “Now I feel like we’re both prisoners.”
